Alex Ramsay specialises in contemporary tableware combining silver with other materials, such as glass and felt. She undertakes a variety of work to commission, producing one off pieces for exhibition and employing small batch production techniques for her collection. Alex established her workshop in 2002, and has won numerous awards and exhibited widely. In 2006 she was awarded the first Silversmithing and Jewellery residency at Cove Park, Scotland. In 2007 she was awarded a Hackney Business Development Grant. Her work is inspired by themes of containment and concealment - exploring these ideas through different combinations of materials in a range of tableware, boxes, containers, vessels and sculptural forms. Alex is interested in how sharp, clean shapes and planes interact with areas of texture and colour - some rust on a pristine object, architectural outlines in the landscape, the arc of a bridge on a skyline. She finds remote, dramatic landscapes inspiring - using specific colours with silver, inspired by the elements - slate greys and blues of clouds and skies, rock, thunder and rain.
